Equine behaviour
Equines who demonstrate behavioural 'problems' or challenging behaviour are often difficult to manage, become extremely distressed and it can also become incredibly distressing for their owners. Many equine behavioural problems can be improved dramatically through alterations of husbandry and management practices, and the implementation of an appropriate positive training programme. Through an understanding of equine ethology the root of the 'problem' behaviour and the motivation behind it can be established and a unique behavioural modification plan can be developed to address the problem.
Some examples of behavioural problems that Anna will be able to help you with include:
- Aggression
- Stereotypies (including weaving, crib biting, box walking, wind sucking, fence walking)
- Separation Anxiety
- Handling difficulties (e.g. refusal to pick up feet, barging, catching issues, clipping issues)
- Loading problems
- Spooking
- Ridden problems (e.g. rearing, bucking, bolting, napping, mounting difficulties, rushing/refusal at jumps)
Every behavioural problem is unique - there is no one simple answer or method to solve all equine behavioural problems. For this reason, a specifically tailored behavioural modification is required on a case by case basis to suit the individual. Whilst it may be possible to address some behavioural problems with small simple environmental alterations, other problems will require a more comprehensive programme including alterations to the environment, management and training of the horse.
Please remember that proper resolution of equine behavioural problems takes time, dedication and commitment from the owner. There are no 'quick fixes' that can create long lasting, sustainable solutions for equine behaviour problems, but with positive involvement and dedication from the owner excellent results can be expected.
